Ghana Literacy Volunteer Trip Information
Thank you all for your interest in participating in the
Ghana literacy volunteer trip! Enclosed in this memo are a few pieces of
information along with some upcoming dates that are important:
·
The dates of the trip will be January 24 -
February 9th;
·
There will be 4 pre-departure team meetings:
o October
20th via Skype - this meeting will be an opportunity for Q&A related to the
logistics, tentative itinerary, timelines, estimate of costs - I will need to
know if you are planning on attending this meeting so that I can set up the
Skype call with you.
o November
2nd - 1:00 - 4:00 (this meeting will be
held close to the Prom Center where the Foundation celebration will occur that
evening, it will also be available via Skype, more info to follow) this meeting
will cover expectations, itinerary, travel details, and team details, Visa
applications, plane tickets etc…
o December
7th 11:00 - 2:00 (location to be determined), at this meeting we will focus on
role and responsibilities, objectives and goals of service learning experiences
and other team related work
o January
4th 11:00 - 2:00 (location to be determined), this meeting will cover the final
details of the upcoming experience
·
Each meeting will be available via Skype
·
The team will be capped at 8 people, and final
commitment must be made at the November 2nd meeting
Many of your questions will be answered at the October
20th meeting - we are listing the questions we are getting, and so if you have
specific questions, please send them to either Kathy or Cathy and we will add
them to the list - remember, if you have a questions, someone else probably
does too…
In the meantime:
·
get your passport in order - you will need to
make certain that your passport is valid through August 31st 2014, because Ghana requires passports
to have 6 months following departure from Ghana on your passport;
·
visit your travel clinic and find out what
immunizations you need - several of the shots you may need require 6 months for
the course of some of the immunizations;
·
research and read information about Ghana and
from the Rotary District 5960 Fast For Hope recommended reading list - I would
add “If I had a water buffalo” by Marilyn Fitzpatrick, or start there;
·
start writing down all of your questions so that
we can look at them as a group.
As always, please feel free to contact Cathy or Kathy and
we look forward to connecting with you all soon.
